New Safe or Second Hand Safe?
If you’re looking to get good value from a safe, you may be considering a used or second hand safe instead of a new one. There are plenty of good second hand safes available, but you’ll need to consider what you need it for in order to know if a used safe is appropriate for you. For example, many fire resistant safes can lose their effectiveness over time, so it’s important to know this if fire protection is a high priority for you.
What type of safe do you need?
With a wide range of safe options available, it pays to be clear about exactly what type of safe meets your needs. Here are some examples of the types of safe available to you:
High Security Safes
Fire Safes / Fire Cabinets
Medium Security Safes
Data Safe
Low Security
Floor Safes
Ideal for locations that hold large amounts of cash and often referred to as ‘Bankers Safes’ due to this. A high security safe offers an effective barrier against attack. The higher the security rating, the more effort it will take for someone to breach the safe.
Medium security safes are also used for locations that carry larger than normal amounts of cash. This might include large retail stores or businesses with high cash turnover such as bars or nightclubs.
Typically a low security safe will be used to protect smaller amounts of cash and/or important documents. This might include smaller retail stores, or businesses who carry sensitive information.
A fire safe or fire cabinet typically offers a lower level of security, as they’re typically made of less metal as it conducts heat. It will protect paper by keeping the internal temperature below 177 degrees C. but will not protect computer media, which can be damaged at around 52 degrees C. or less.
The role of a data safe is to keep temperature and humidity to below 52 degrees C. They use a different technology to a fire safe and can, depending on size be more expensive when compared to a fire safe.
A good floor safe is, as suggested by the name, positioned on the floor, and should be able to be bolted down. If a floor safe doesn’t offer this facility, then it is more like a fire safe – especially if it is light enough for one or two people to carry.
